why footballers need to learn about psychology

Psychology in Football: Why Should the Players Care?

Football is majestic. Over the last 150 years or so, it has grown from a fun game of kickabout to the world’s most popular sport.

Where playing at the very top requires quite a bit of excellence.

Anyone can play, but if you want to get paid to do so, the competition is staggeringly high. And the cost of entry is becoming more expensive with each passing year.

Becoming a top-level footballer is extremely difficult. Downright impossible when you look at the stats…

Should you not bother then?

The numbers are disheartening, sure… But at an individual level, they’re rarely going to stop anyone from having a jolly good go at it.

In most cases, it’s not even a matter of choice really. Most footballers are helplessly drawn to it, hypnotized by their love for the game.

So if you’re not quitting, then…

Can you do something to improve your chances of making it?

How Most Football Players Improve

Going pro will depend on a number of factors. The key is to focus on those you can affect, and work on them… You need to work both hard AND smart.

Simple, right?

Yet, football training is overwhelmingly focused on the physical and the technical sides of the game, which means the mental side often gets sidelined.

And it kind of makes sense why that’s the case.

For starters, technical and physical factors are easy to spot and measure. There are also numerously tested and proven training methods to help you improve. And when you apply them, the cause and effect are directly and obviously connected.

Sports Psychology: Why You Should Mind the Mental Side of the Game

But suppose the thing you’re trying to improve isn’t exactly technical or physical? Nothing like positioning during set pieces, passing in the final third, or adding muscle to your calves…

Let’s say the main problem with your game is being overwhelmed by personal errors. Or you’re having trouble communicating with your teammates. Or maybe you get so angry at times it makes you want to nibble on your opponents.

Or suppose you’re not even struggling with any particular issues but you understand there are ways you can improve…

Can you work your way to becoming a better footballer, mentally?

Of course, you can!

Whether you’re working on it with the help of a sport psychologist, your coach, or even by yourself, there is a whole range of concepts, methods, techniques, and exercises you can leverage to improve the mental side of your game.

I plan on exploring as many as I can right here on this website.
